I travel to the High Sierra as often as possible to witness nature’s transformations from season to season. On a recent trip during the winter, I revisited a grove of aspens I painted during the previous fall. As I made my way through the meadow and snow fields, it was my hope to find a scene to describe how I felt about winter. It was a delight to see how the sunlight passed through and played with the bare branches. They seem delicate in their transparency and this is what I hoped to capture in my work. With the background hill and boulders as a backdrop and a stage of warm grasses and cool snow, the idea for this painting was conceived.
