I used a combination of charcoal, pastels, and pastel pencils as I did this portrait from life. The lady was from Eastern Europe. I wanted to do a lively, rather rapidly done portrait that emphasized the strokes of pastel, the noble shape of her head and hair, and light and shadow as it brought out structure.
