The inspiration for the painting, Repose, came from catching my granddaughter and our dog, Max, napping on the sofa one afternoon. It was such a sentimental picture to me as I adore them both…so it had to be painted! In order to keep the composition soft, I used muted soft pastel (and pastel pencils for detail) and more intense hues to bathe the figures in light. The consistent angles in the composition gave the painting a sense of quiet movement, almost like breathing. I began with the background, keeping it simple and muted, bathing the figures with light in order to keep them central.
