I used pastel pencil to sketch in the location of boy's head and shoulders. I then proceeded to lay in darks and foundational skin tones with Nupastels. I added some basic background colors before getting too far along with the boy's features. I continued layering softer pastels on top until I was happy with his expression and then finished up the background.
